| Soda Blasting |
As the name implies the blasting medium used is baking soda. This is non-corrosive, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. It will remove paint without causing any distortion which can be a problem with some of the traditional mediua. Because it is extremely lightweight and water soluble it can either be blown out or flushed out of components making it the best choice for work on engines etc. Unlike some other stripping methods it does not leave a corrosive residue which can eat into the metal over time.
Unfortunately nothing is ever perfect and soda blasting has two main drawbacks:
(1) It is expensive and it suitable for single use only.
(2) Whilst soda is excellent at removing paint, it will not remove rust or thick layers of filler. Because of this, when blasting bodywork we remove the paint using soda then go back over any rusty areas using a slightly more abrasive medium. Although more abrasive than soda the medium used will not cause any distortion to body panels.
Soda blasting is suitable for use on all metals, wood, fibreglass and many plastics – in fact, it can be used on most materials.
